Artist’s Statement Portrait painting and sculpting are deeply personal forms of art, for both the artist and the subject. Each painting or sculpture must be approached with the intent of capturing as much personality, likeness, and inner spirit as humanly possible. Weaving them together presents difficult challenges to be met and thoroughly explored using all the tools at hand, including photography, and most critically, drawing. Drawing from life, the greatest tool of choice, may not always be an option; therefore, learning to draw with accuracy merits a high priority and commitment. I find that during the execution of a painting or sculpture, I must often redraw (or with a sculpture, remeasure and rework accordingly). Patience and being willing to start over, as necessary, is essential to achieving a work of art worthy of bearing my signature. Over a thirty year span, I studied with eminent artists in workshops around the country. During my college years, I was especially fortunate to learn from sculptor Charles Umlauf who taught me to see form, reflection, and significantly, to simplify. Subsequent workshops with portrait artists, Daniel Greene, Paul Leveille, and Harley Brown further honed my skills. By immersing myself in books, videos, and exhibitions by current fine artists, as well as studying paintings and sculptures by old masters, my education continues. I never stop learning, and that is the richest benefit of being an artist. |
